Faced with the loss of its accreditation and a rapidly-changing student body, Compton College had to spearhead a strategic planning process that would lay a road map for its future. The faculty senate decided that the first step was to thoroughly review all programs and catalog their trends over the last five years and their plans for the future.

Using KMR associates, Compton College was able to review over 60 departments fully in less than 6 weeks’ time. With the full support of campus administration, the program review “season” became a unifying exercise among faculty and staff as the entire campus worked towards completing the various components of their program review, including resource requests and goal setting.

Another goal of the Program Review was course catalog review. Each program was given a list of its entire current course catalog, with the option to archive courses or flag them for needing a course update. It also gave faculty the chance to update the transfer information for each course, along with a course suggestion box to propose new courses and the justification behind those courses.

At the end of the process, KMR hosted a grant writing seminar on how to convert the objectives identified in the program review into tangible grants and partnerships. Held off-campus at the ultra-modern Home Depot Center facility, this was a chance for a diverse group of faculty and administrators to share ideas and strategies for enacting tangible change across campus.

With program reviews in hand, Compton faculty and administrators have documentation on the public record that shows their determination to improve their programs and strengthen their ties with the community.
